Hello Parents,
I wanted to take a moment to wish all of you a beautiful and blessed Lenten season.
I have some exciting news! The fifth graders (with some help from the 4th graders) will be performing the Passion Play on Holy Thursday at 10:30. All are invited to attend. All children will need costumes. Please ask your child to tell you about his/her part. Scripts have been handed out and your child should be busy learning his/her lines.
Here are a few other things keeping up busy in fifth grade:
Religion: In addition to practicing our lines for the play, we are memorizing the Ten Commandments (test Friday) and will begin studying the miracles of Jesus next week.
Math: We are adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. The children are using these skills to ‘create and run’ a coffee shop. Finding the least common denominator has been challenging for some of the children. Any additional practice you can provide at home would be greatly appreciated.
Social Studies: We’ve begun studying the continent of Asia and are creating a slideshow about the most interesting sites.
Reading/ELA: The children are reading and writing in different genres. Today we started reading biographies. The children are researching and writing an informational piece on a topic of their choosing.
We are also identifying and using prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections (test next week)

During Catholic Schools Week, we collected lots of food and treats for the Culpeper Humane Society and made Valentines for the local nursing home.
Put baking soda in a balloon. Add vinegar to a water bottle. Combine. Do you get a physical or chemical reaction? The fifth graders know!
It's Geometry time! Time for our fifth grade Blokus Tournament
The Fifth Graders did an outstanding job leading their Sacred Heart Mass today! I am one proud teacher!
We wrapped up our unit on the skeletal system by dissecting owl pellets and classifying bones. Fifth graders are very scientific!
Each fifth grader chose a saint to research and write a storybook. On All Hallows Eve we dressed up as saints and read our storybooks to the lower grades.
Fifth Graders are learning about the Skeletal System. They showed their creative sides by designing and labeling skeletons using different kinds of pasta.
We had a great time at the Culpeper Airport for STEM Fest!
We're working on collaboration and problem solving skills. This challenge- build the longest chain you can using only 1 piece of paper and tape. And you only have 25 minutes.
What a great first week of Fifth Grade! I have the best class ever!
Besides getting used to a new teacher and new routine we:
took a spelling inventory to find our level.
took a learning inventory to find out the way we learn best (visual, tactile or auditory)
We started our first novel study- Frindle.
We began "multiplication boot camp,". The students need to know their multiplication facts automatically.
Cursive is better with shaving cream!
